Guestroom Improvement Program (GRIP) Notes Update

Many of us have been deep into updating guest rooms over the winter to meet Choice’s recent March 1st deadlines. Through this process, we have received a number of calls asking for clarity with a number of other items listed in Choice’s GRIP guide.

Choice Hotels has a helpful FAQ area pertaining to this new program, found on the Econo Lodge brand page in Choice Central. We wanted also to point out a few items that have stood out in order to better assist our members with their long-term decision making and property investment.

Paint Colors – While much of this work should have already taken place at your property at this point, remember that Choice has offered its brand and codes as a guide only – not a mandate. Franchisees are free to choose a brand of paint (we recommend BEHR Paint and their 20% ELFA discount), and colors of their choosing. What is mandated is the removal of wallpaper borders plus having the headboard wall painted as a different accent color than the rest of the guest room.

Case Goods & Seating – Choice’s only mandates here are that wooden sled chairs are no longer allowed in guest rooms, and brass finish pulls are no longer allowed on case goods. The furnishings listed in their GRIP Guide are not mandated – again these are only suggestions from several of Choice’s preferred vendors.

Lighting – Polished brass lighting fixtures are not allowed. Franchisees are okay to purchase lighting fixtures outside of what’s listed in this guide provided they are not a polish brass finish and are in line with Choice’s other standards involving lighting and lamps.

Draperies – Solid color only per the new standards. Again, the suppliers and selections in the GRIP Guide are only suggestions, not mandates. All that is mandated is that they no longer be patterned.

Micro-Refrigerators – The new mandate is that all guest rooms must have a mini refrigerator (minimum 2.0 cubic feet interior) that is kept in a frost-free state. The suppliers and models listed in the GRIP guide are not mandated, nor is having a frost-free style model, only that the refrigerators be in frost-free condition for guests.

Artwork – The license plate medley piece in the shape of the US is a mandatory item for all guestrooms. These pieces may only be ordered through Choice’s selected provider listed.
